Landline Telephone Service is Protected But in Danger

The right to access landline telephone service is protected by government legislation. Large telecommunication companies like AT&T are pushing for this legislation to be scrapped because they do not want to maintain the lines in rural areas. Maintenance is expensive because materials and labor are costly. They see no need to keep the old copper lines in good repair when more and more people are relying on cell phones for communication. Most lines are now fiber optic and a switch over for all service areas would be an expensive endeavor also.
